Operations and Maintenance Center . A key component of the NLEX system is the Operation and Maintenance Center in Balintawak, Caloocan City that houses the traffic control room from where activities along the expressway are monitored. The Center's tasks include :

• Patrolling portions of the expressway every 30 minutes
• Responding to accidents within 20 minutes
• Inspecting the highway for problems and defects and undertaking the needed repair work within 24 hours
• Ensuring that transactions at toll booths are completed within 10 seconds

Toll Payment Options. Motorists have three payment options at the NLEX.

• Cash
• Prepaid toll cards or magnetic swipe cards
• EC Tags (electronic devices attached to car windshields with information read by an antenna at the toll barrier)
