Phase 2: Connecting Mindanao Avenue to NLEX

MNTC is pursuing an expansion program that will allow motorists from congested Metro Manila to get quickly to NLEX.

The expansion program currently being pursued is Phase 2, otherwise called Segment 8.1, with a length of about 2.50 kms. It will connect Mindanao Avenue to NLEX-Phase 1 south of Valenzuela Interchange.

The construction of Phase 2, scheduled in December 2008, is expected to be completed within 14 months or in February 2010.

Project Description

A vehicular overpass, a two span-20.69 meter length, 2-lane bridge with 1 m. sidewalks on both sides, will be constructed at Que Grande to provide public access to and from both sides of the expressway. The abutments and middle piers will rest on spread footings.

Eighteen reinforced concrete pipe culverts (RCPC) and seven reinforced concrete box culverts (RCBC) will be constructed across the expressway to ensure efficient flow of surface water.

The C5/NLEX interchange connecting Segment 8.1 and 9 to the NLEX Phase 1 will be a full cloverleaf type with varying loop design speeds. This includes a two span-31.106 m. length, 11-lane structure divided into eastbound and westbound bridges. The two abutments and wall type piers will rest on spread footings.

As in Phase 1, Segment 8.1 will be fully equipped with toll collection, traffic management and telecommunication systems. The whole alignment will be completely fenced off, with median lighting, lane markings and signages. There will also be emergency call boxes and laybays at strategic locations.

Did you know that when Phase 2 is completed, northbound motorists could avoid the hassle of negotiating through heavy traffic in EDSA and other high density areas in Metro Manila, thereby cutting down their travel time?
